SONOVA

Where precision makes itself heard.

Next-generation laser depaneling for miniature, high-density electronics

At Sonova, product performance starts with the smallest components. Photonics Systems developed a customized automation solution for flexible electronic substrates measuring just 3 × 24 mm. The system combines next-generation laser technology with process expertise and production-ready automation—delivering clean, precise depaneling with minimal thermal impact.

Small components. Exacting requirements.

The electronics at the heart of Sonova’s products are compact, sensitive and designed for exceptional reliability. At just 3 × 24 mm, the flexible substrates in this project left little room for variation.

Cut quality was only one part of the challenge. Sonova also needed a stable, repeatable process that would protect product quality while fitting seamlessly into an automated manufacturing environment.

Built around the application

Photonics Systems worked closely with Sonova from the initial concept through to the finished system. Instead of adapting a standard setup, the team engineered the laser process, automation and production integration as one coordinated solution.

Process expertise for sensitive electronics

Laser parameters and process control tailored to small, highly integrated, flexible substrates.

Seamless production integration

Coordinated process control and extraction for consistent quality during continuous operation.

Custom automation

Developed together with Sonova and aligned with the application and manufacturing workflow.

Next-generation laser technology

Greater cutting precision with a lower thermal load.

Layered precision

During laser depaneling, a precisely controlled beam follows the programmed cutting path and removes the material layer by layer.

This creates a highly controlled separation process with excellent accuracy, low thermal impact and minimal contamination.

More than a laser system

A solution for sensitive electronics has to perform beyond the lab. It must remain stable, available and reliable under real production conditions.

That is why this project was never just about cutting precision. Its success comes from the way process engineering, automation and integration work together—turning a demanding application into a robust solution for 24/7 manufacturing.

About Sonova

Sonova is a global leader in innovative hearing care solutions. Its products rely on miniature, highly integrated electronics designed to perform with exceptional consistency and reliability.

This places exacting demands on every stage of electronics manufacturing. With components this small and sensitive, precision alone is not enough: processes must also remain stable, repeatable and dependable in continuous production.
