Active and passive laser trimming

The ever-increasing demands on the precision of circuits, resistors and sensors are driving the development and application of advanced laser trimming technologies.
These technologies make it possible to minimize manufacturing tolerances cost-effectively, precisely and quickly, thus reducing variability in electronic circuits.
Laser trimming optimizes the electrical properties of a circuit by specifically adjusting resistance values with a laser beam.
During this process, the circuit is connected to the laser trimmer’s integrated measuring system via a probe card.
The resistor material is then removed in real time by the laser beam until the desired target value is reached.

How does laser trimming work at the Photonics Systems Group?

Laser alignment of resistors, sensors and circuits is a standard industrial process to significantly reduce the manufacturing variation of electronic components and circuits. Photonics Systems Group’s state-of-the-art systems can either be operated with the high-precision internal tester system or connected to external tester systems.
The systems can be equipped with laser sources of different wavelengths and pulse lengths to achieve an optimal process result on any thick and thin film material.
The sophisticated software of the systems allows the configuration of any conceivable trimming geometry. The open architecture allows easy integration of 3rd party hardware or customized algorithms or data integration.

The Photonics Systems Group’s range is rounded off by comprehensive automation solutions. The systems can be automated as stand-alone solutions or integrated inline into customer lines.

The Photonics Systems Group is at your side as a strong partner – from the feasibility study to the selection of the optimum process machine and the appropriate level of automation – all from a single source.

Advantages of laser trimming

  • High-precision adjustments: Laser trimming enables extremely precise adjustments of resistance values and other electrical properties
  • Real-time monitoring: The process is continuously monitored so that immediate corrections can be made.
  • Non-contact process: As the laser is non-contact, there is no mechanical stress or damage to the components, which increases reliability.
  • Clean processing: Laser trimming results in clean, precise processing without physical residue and without significant heat input
  • No tool wear: The laser works wear-free, which significantly reduces operating costs.
  • High yield: Precise machining minimizes waste, which increases efficiency and reduces production costs.
  • Wide range of material compatibility: The laser can be used on different materials, which enables a high degree of flexibility in production.
  • Complex geometries: Laser trimming enables the processing of complex structures and geometries without additional set-up times or special tools.
  • Stable process conditions: As no mechanical tools are used, the process conditions remain stable, which increases the quality and consistency of the products.
  • Reproducible results: Calibrated parameters enable reproducible results to be achieved, regardless of the machine used.
  • Integration into production lines: Laser trimming systems can be easily integrated into existing production lines, enabling a high degree of automation and compatibility with Industry 4.0 standards.
  • Efficient scalability: From stand-alone systems to fully integrated production lines, laser trimming systems can be flexibly adapted to production requirements.
